Choosing the Right HD LCD Projector – Things to Consider
Today’s HD LCD projector is a distant cousin of the models we saw in the board rooms and living rooms of the past. The current technology has caused leaps and bounds in the quality of the equipment as well as the picture produced.
These machines are no longer reserved for conference rooms and homes of the wealthy. They’ve decreased in size and in price over the years. And in many cases, have become portable enough to go from work, to home, and even on the road.
While the HD LCD projector is quite versatile, it is still important to consider how you will use your projector when you are in the process of choosing the perfect model for you.
Here I’ll list the likely scenarios in which you would use a projector and what you should look for in a HD LCD projector to meet that need.
For the Office or Auditorium
Often times projectors for large areas such as conference rooms or auditoriums are larger pieces of equipment that remain stationary mounted on a fixed structure or possibly hanging from a projector ceiling mount. When choosing a machine for this setting, be sure to consider the following things.
- Brightness – If you are using the projector in a large room, you want to make sure that the projector is powerful enough to emit bright light for a clear picture on your viewing surface. Otherwise your picture will be dim and un-viewable. Look for the ANSI lumens rating. 2000 to 3000 lumens should be enough to clearly project an image in an auditorium setting.
- Presentations of Charts & Figures – high resolution equals sharper images.
1. PowerPoint Presentations – look for high SGVA resolution (no less than 800×600 pixels)
2. Excel Spreadsheets & Figures – look for high XGA resolution (no less than 1024×768)
For Your Home
If you need a home HD LCD projector, there many, many options available to you. While the setup and planning for you projector may not be as intense, you do need to take stock of your viewing area to insure you make a good choice for your home theater setup.
- Brightness – You still want to consider brightness, but for different reasons. If your room is not completely dark or heavily shaded with curtains or heavy blinds, the picture could be hard to see. Refer to the ASNI lumens rating and seek a high rating to compensate for a room that isn’t quite dark enough.
- Viewing movies & gaming – if you are looking for seemingly life like images, you should go for higher resolution. Especially since you are talking about looking at such a big picture. If your resolution is low, it is easier to see pixilation which can be irritating to the eyes because it feels like you are viewing the picture through a screen.
For Travel
If you need a projector for travel, look for the ultra-light LCD versions. These models often make great combination machines for home and office. They are compact and light, but fully functional in both situations.
When it comes to brightness and resolution, determine a median number that will work for you in both situations. If you can do this, you’ll get a huge return on investment for you travel HD LCD projector.
Now you know some common scenarios for needing an HD LCD projector as well as things to consider when choosing your perfect model.
